Aeternum, Greg(o)rian, GraVil, Phyrexia & Saturnian @ The Boston Music Rooms - 18.1.12

"Formed in early 2011 by a group of experienced young musicians, Aeternum are a five piece Blackened Death Metal band based in London.

Brought together by our shared influences of Dissection, Behemoth, Necrophobic and Belphegor as well as a love of classic Black and Death Metal, our sound is based on a combination of both genres’ hallmarks; ethereal melodies woven into crushing guitars, driven by pounding drums and inhuman growls and screams."

"Greg(o)rian display heavy influences from bands such as Sunn o))), Earth, Sleep with some tendency for blendings Neurosis and Post-Metal style meanderings into their tracks which often clock in at over 30 minutes long."

"GraVil are a 5 piece metal band based in London, UK. Their line-up includes twin lead guitarists Ryszard Gabrielczyk and Irene Ketikidi, rhythm section of James Chapman (Drums) and Nathan "Sparx" Lamb (Bass), rounded off by vocalist Gra.

The bands sound has been descibed by Rocksound Magazine as "Mixing up all things Chimaira and Dark Tranquility" and Kerrang! magazine review as "Brutalising Tech Metal Wizardry". Tracks such as Helmsman, Something Worth Chasing and March of the Titans (co written alongside Cradle Of Filth axeman James McIlroy) have recieved numerous media coverage incluiding Ian Camfields XFM rockshow, Bruce Dickinsons BBC6 Rockshow and Scuzz TV. The EP "Age Of Corruption" also enjoyed a stint on HMV's front page as a featured rock/metal artist. "

(At the moment this video is set to Private so should not be viewable here. The band contacted me and asked me to take it down because of some future CD release. Maybe someday they will let me set it to Public viewing again)

"Hailing from London, Phyrexia is a six piece Epic Extreme Metal band who are making an impact on the unsigned metal scene. We formed circa 2008 and ever since have been gigging across the Capital, gathering a loyal fan base at the same time as realising our musical vision.

Taking inspiration from across the entire Met- al spectrum including everything from the theatricality of Power Metal to the crushing brutality of Death and Black Metal, Phyrexia have found a niche within an often superficial and one dimensional scene. Blood curdling screams, sweeping keyboard melodies, galloping riffs, catchy choruses and dual lead harmonies form the basis of our sound."

"Saturnian are a 7 piece from the United Kingdom, proud of a country rich in metal history and ready to usher in a new age charged with its pedigree. Saturnian was formed around one main principle – to create epic and majestic music to enchant fans of all metal genres; delivered in a grand and dramatic style that could soundtrack a blockbuster movie or theatrical performance. Expect razor sharp riffing, fist pounding rhythms, and a symphonic backbone worthy of the armies of Hell or the far reaches of the Universe. In true portentous British style, this is rounded out by a massive choral explosion, soaring sopranos, and ethereal Gregorian chant. This ethos comes to life in the Saturnian live experience, which in itself is a theatrical spectacle as opposed to a generic recital of music. Saturnian breeds an eclectic blend of voices, stunning instrumental performances, and a visual experience that will amaze, mystify and inspire!"

Grand Magus & Cathedral (Farewell Show) @ The Forum - 3.12.11

CATHEDRAL ANNOUNCE FINAL SHOW.

As announced earlier this year, 2011 will be the final year of underground UK metal mainstays Cathedral as a live band. Having recently reunited with former bassist Scott Carlson (Repulsion/Death Breath), they’ve just finished a busy schedule that took in Japan, America, Brazil, Greece, Czech Republic and Finland.

The band is now preparing for their last EVER live appearance in the Northern Hemisphere at London’s The Forum in Kentish Town on Saturday 3rd December 2011. Sharing the bill will be very special guests and friends of the band; Grand Magus, Comus and Gentleman’s Pistols.

When asked at the possibility of a future reunion, vocalist Lee Dorrian stated, “well we’ve been doing this for over twenty-one years now and I think it’s a bit of a cop out when bands get back together. I never-say-never, but I honestly can’t see it ever happening. The music means more to us than that and it’s not as though people haven’t had enough chances to see us over the years. I would say it’s very unlikely.”

Since forming in 1990 the band have released nine studio albums and several EP's. A large part of their career was spent recording for Earache Records, debuting with the landmark 1991 Doom Metal classic Forest of Equilibrium. This was followed by the seminal 1993 Ethereal Mirror album, which was released by Columbia records in America to large critical acclaim.

More recently Cathedral continued to expand on their overall sound, releasing two albums for the Nuclear Blast label. Dorrian continues; "Our latest album The Guessing Game is exactly where we wanted to be after all this time. Staying in one place, being repetitive and predictable is something we wanted to avoid right from the off." He adds; “When we first formed Cathedral, we were playing the most unfashionable form of metal that was around. You could almost say the same today, despite the fact that we sound quite a bit different now. With this in mind, it’s amazing that we managed to maintain our status, whilst many trends and bands have since come and gone”.

Cathedral’s uncompromising individual style has gained them a large cult-following around the world. They recently reunited with the original line-up for their twentieth anniversary concert to perform the aforementioned Forest of Equilibrium debut in its entirety. This event was recorded, as well as a main set, containing a plethora of favourites spanning their illustrious career. The fruits of this recording have just been released as a deluxe CD box set through Rise Above Records and is simply titled Anniversary.

Before bowing out altogether, the band will record one final studio album in 2012 to be titled The Last Spire. Following its recording the band will be over for good and there will be no shows to back it up. Dorrian concludes; "It's just time to move on and leave our recorded legacy to linger. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to those special people who have supported Cathedral over the years. It may sound like a cliché but it's certainly true - we simply wouldn't have been able to do it without you, thanks!"

Various limited items will be on sale exclusively at the show, including a limited edition 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle, limited event screenprint, shirt and special edition of their forthcoming 12" EP titled A New Ice Age. The show editions will be white vinyl (100 copies) and transparent blue (200 copies) both come with Dave Patchett art poster, not available elsewhere.

Comus had to cancel playing this show and I didn't film any of Gentleman's Pistols

Just after filming this I was approached by security and threatened with ejection from the gig, so I never filmed anymore, wicked gig though :)

Thanks for all the memories Cathedral you never failed to entertain

Bloodcell, Crypsis, Kemakil & Necroriser @ The Unicorn - 1.12.11

This gig didn't work out too well for me filming wise. I think I missed Bloodcell, then my camera cut out during Crypsis and I just wasn't in the mood, plus Heavy Metal Muppets had their big posh camera there and my piddling little vidcam looked tame in comparison haha camera envy again ;)

Kemakil had line-up probs, Chris wasn't able to make it and Haydn had to pull out after actually getting to the venue so Rob & Aaron just blasted away and ruled the stage anyway :D

For some reason I didn't even film Necroriser this night! I think it was quite packed and I couldn't be arsed to find a spot to film from :( and then it seems that the Muppets never posted any footage from this gig up!! Oh well.

There is a great write up about this gig on the Heavy Metal Muppets blog, go read it HERE

Absolute Filth II @ The Purple Turtle - 27.11.11

Crappy Sunday London travel woes meant that we missed the 1st two bands and pissed off a bit early missing the last two bands but enjoy the bands I did manage to catch here \m/

"punishing crust metal brutality"

"pissed up sludgy rock n roll wankers"

"crust tinged atmospheric doom"

"savage sludged up hardcore ear rape"
(someone on YouTube told me these 2 tunes are "Covered in Green" & "Suffering in Order to Learn")

"filth encrusted sludge / hardcore / metal"

"the masters of disgusting sludge / death / doom return"
